Siraitia grosvenorii, also known as Monk Fruit or luohan guo, is a herbaceous perennial vine of the gourd family. It is native to Southern China and Northern Thailand. The plant is cultivated for its fruit extract, called mogrosides, which creates a sweet sensation 250 times stronger than sucrose.
Dating back to the 13th century, the plant is most prized for its sweet fruits, which are used for medicinal purposes and as a low-calorie sweetener and a perfect sugar substitute for everyone, used often by diabetics . In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used for cough and sore throat and in southern China it is believed to be a longevity aid. The fruits are generally sold in dried form, and traditionally used in herbal tea, baked goods, drinks, soup, just about anything.
