Dioscorea villosa is a species of twining tuberous vine which is native to eastern North America. It is commonly known as wild yam, colic root, rheumatism root, devil's bones, and fourleaf yam, is a low-creeping perennial that grows wild in the eastern half of North America. The root is not related to sweet potatoes or yams. It is used for herbal preparations and body care products. It is said to alleviate symptoms associated with menopause and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Wild yam contains no progesterone, natural or otherwise. Traditional Chinese Medicine has used wild yam for at least 2,000 years, since the time of the writing of the Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica.
